Project Overview
The Siemens Heavy Manufacturing Facility — SEDH Expansion Phase 2 & 3 is located in the 1st Industrial City, Dammam, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia.
The project was developed by Siemens Energy with Saudi AMANA Contracting Co. as the main contractor, Turner & Townsend as project manager, High Performance Directive (HPD) as consultant, and Zamil Steel as the structural steel fabricator and erector.
EJAD Gulf Technologies was appointed as the specialist fireproofing subcontractor responsible for the complete passive fire protection scope across the facility.

EJAD’s scope on the Siemens Expansion Project covered the complete passive fire protection system from surface preparation through to final topcoat. Works included abrasive blasting and surface preparation of all structural steel members, primer touch-up to repaired and fabricated areas, application of Jotun SteelMaster 600WF waterborne intumescent coating and SteelMaster 60SB solvent-borne intumescent coating as specified per section type, followed by a decorative topcoat system. All heavy access equipment, airless spray machines, PPE, certified applicators, and third-party inspection were included within EJAD’s scope of supply.

Project Challenges
The Siemens Expansion Project presented a unique set of technical and logistical challenges. The facility comprised multiple buildings constructed simultaneously, requiring EJAD to coordinate fireproofing works in parallel with other subcontractors across a complex, active construction site. With over 200 unique structural steel section types on site, each member required an individual dry film thickness (DFT) calculation based on its Hp/A ratio and the specified fire resistance rating — meaning no two sections could be treated identically. Works were carried out at heights of up to 40 metres using industrial elevated access equipment. Quality assurance on this project involved multiple layers of inspection — including the paint manufacturer’s representative, the project consultant, the main contractor, and an independent third-party inspection agency — ensuring full compliance at every stage. EJAD completed over 1,100 hours of site operations with zero safety incidents recorded.
Paint System
The intumescent coating system specified for this project used Jotun SteelMaster 600WF — a single-component waterborne thin-film intumescent coating independently approved for cellulosic fire protection of structural steel, certified to EN 13381-8 and BS 476 Part 20/21. SteelMaster 60SB solvent-borne intumescent was applied to outside members and exposed areas requiring enhanced moisture resistance. Both products were applied by airless spray to the exact dry film thickness specified in the Certifire-approved loading tables for each individual steel section — ensuring every member achieves its required fire resistance rating.
